The rise of current GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs, such as ozempic/wegovy and mounjaro, and the development of new ones with less side effects and possible oral administration (as opposed to current injection), is poised to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity in the general population.
However, can Ozempic/Wegovy, Mounjaro et al eliminate the cellulite appearance?
Existing severe cellulite after GLP-1 drug administration
GLP-1 drugs can indeed reduce or eliminate overweight or obesity. However, cellulite in overweight and obese people is always already very established, causing permanent changes in the connective tissue, so it cannot be eliminated just with a GLP-1 agonist receptor medication.
Sure, adipocytes will empty to a large extent in the areas affected by cellulite but they will not empty completely (that would require someone to become extremely thin). Furthermore, the hypodermal fibrosis found in cellulite will stay. Plus the overall skin laxity left after the removal of fat will also stay, further accentuating the appearance of cellulite.
The best possible treatment for such residual cellulite and skin laxity is deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency combined with deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation.
Existing mild cellulite after GLP-1 drug administration
At the moment such medication is not given to non-overweight people, i.e. the people who may only have mild or average cellulite.
In the case of mild cellulite, i.e. cellulite which did not have a chance to create much fibrosis in the hypodermis, where adipocytes are not excessively sized and where dermis did not end up becoming too loose, such medication may lead to considerable reduction of cellulite.
(Existing “average” cellulite, i.e. neither mild nor severe cellulite, will be reduced to a large extent but not considerably.)
Whatever remains of such mild/average cellulite, and the skin laxity that accompanies it, can be completely eliminated with the combination of deep, strong RF/cavitation, as mentioned above.
But that remains a future scenario, if and when such medication is prescribed to much slimmer people than today.
Cellulite prevention with GLP-1 medication?
If in the future GLP-1 receptor agonist medication becomes almost adverse reaction-free (no drug can ever be 100% adverse reaction-free) and is taken by most members of the public, in that case, yes, cellulite may never develop in most of those people.
I used the words “may” and “most” in the above paragraph because cellulite can also be caused by inactivity, water retention, inflammation, different drugs etc, so even if we generally inhibit hypodermal fat accumulation with medication (again, there is no guarantee of 100% hypodermal fat accumulation), some people may still develop cellulite.
But at the moment we cannot be sure if such super-safe medication will exist and this option remains science fiction.
