Centella asiatica / Gotu kola and obesity
Centella asiatica (gotu kola) exerts multiple actions against cellulite and its concentrated extract, comprising asiatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassic acid, madecassoside, is the most important anti-cellulite herbal extract known.
Previously asiatic acid was shown to specifically exert anti-obesity activity and now new research shows that madecassoside may also do the same.
Madecassoside induces thermogenesis and adipocyte browning
In this new research scientists cultured mouse visceral white adipocytes (white fat cells taken from deep abdominal fat) and found that madecassoside led to lipolysis (fat release) and adipocyte browning. Madecassoside was found to boost lipolysis and browning by boosting the proteins PPAR-alpha and FGF21.
Brown adipocytes burn fat via thermogenesis (heat production), as opposed to to white adipocytes that accumulate fat. Thermogenesis, browning, PPAR-alpha and FGF21 are key indicators that a substance induces fat reduction.
The scientists’ conclusion is that “madecassoside promotes thermogenic browning and lipolysis while inhibiting adipocyte lipogenesis, thus showing the potential for attenuating obesity. The study suggested that MA could be a viable therapeutic approach for treating obesity.”
Cellulite creams with gotu kola extract, gotu kola tea and gotu kola supplements
In practice, a cellulite cream concentrated in the main active ingredients of centella asiatica (asiatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassic acid, madecassoside) is ideal for cellulite prevention and reduction.
Gotu kola tea and concentrated gotu kola supplements would also be great in preventing cellulite and perhaps also contribute towards weight maintenance or reduction.
However, against the backdrop of very unhealthy diet no supplement or tea can really reduce or even prevent fat accumulation, so these should be used in combination with exercise and healthy diet. And the same applies to cellulite creams and cellulite.
Herbal extracts can only have a minor effect - diet and exercise are the main weight/cellulite reduction/maintenance factors, with supplements, teas and creams secondary - so don’t expect miracles.

Abstract: Objectives: Madecassoside (MA) is a triterpene derived from Centella asiatica that has been recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in various disease models. However, its direct impact on cultured white adipocytes and the underlying mechanisms, mainly through gene knockdown, have not been thoroughly explored. Methods: Western blot analysis was utilized to assess the expression levels of various proteins, while oil red O staining was used to measure lipid deposition. The adipocyte shapes were confirmed using H&E staining. Key findings: MA treatment enhanced browning and lipolysis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and adipose tissue from experimental mice while suppressing lipogenesis. Furthermore, MA treatment increased the expression of PPARα and FGF21 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes as well as the secretion of FGF21 into the culture medium. Knockdown of PPARα or FGF21 using siRNA diminished the effects of MA on lipid metabolism in cultured adipocytes. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that MA promotes thermogenic browning and lipolysis while inhibiting adipocyte lipogenesis, thus showing the potential for attenuating obesity. The study suggested that MA could be a viable therapeutic approach for treating obesity.
