Is yellow LED any good?

I have been involved in phototherapy for the last 15 years and what was true then remains true today: the only wavelengths worth having treatment with are red, at around 630nm, infrared, at around 830nm, and i some cases blue, at around 415nm. These are the wavelengths which have been researched for decades with thousands of studies to prove their effectiveness. LED light therapy has gained huge popularity in the last few years, with a plethora of machines, from high-end and super effective to low-end and practically useless and with each of them employing different intensities and wavelengths.

Blue, red, near infrared light, ~415nm, ~630nm and ~830nm, respectively, are proven to work by literally thousands of studies.

Only a handful of studies on yellow light therapy, in contrast to thousands of studies on red and near infrared light

However, there are only a handful of studies about yellow LED (around 580nm), so it is largely unproven and most probably not nearly as effective as red and infrared light therapy.

In terms of safety, yellow LED at normal intensities would be safe - just not very effective.

Yellow light: too superficially acting and no effect on mitochondria, in contrast to good penetration with red and near infrared light

The problem with yellow light wavelengths is that they act very superficially (red penetrates skin better and near infrared penetrates even more).

On the other hand, the blue wavelength at around ~415nm is proven to kill bacteria via its action on porphyrins, and thereby help with acne control and reduction, despite it being very superficially acting. Yellow light has no such action.

Furthermore, red and near infrared at around ~630nm and ~830nm have been proven to stimulate mitochondrial function and this is now considered their main mode of action in regard to their healing / rejuvenating properties.

In contrast, yellow light does not stimulate mitochondrial function.

At our clinic we do not use yellow LED and would not use until proper - and a lot of - research on it is published.

What about green, orange, turquoise or violet light LED therapy?

The same comments about yellow light LED therapy applies to green and orange LED light therapy (equally unproven); turquoise (😂, no other comments…); and the very dangerous violet wavelengths, found in some LED devices, usually low-end ones.

All these frequencies just don’t have anything much to offer - at least according to research, and they are used more for marketing than therapeutic utility.
