Is fat or sugar worse for cellulite?

Unless we are talking about fried oils/fats or hydrogenated oils/fats, sugar is a worse food ingredient that fat. Below I am explaining the rationale for classifying sugar as worse than fat, for either cellulite or overall health.

What causes cellulite: fat or sugar?

Sugar, fat and cellulite

What is worse, fat or sugar?

This is a common question, both for cellulite prevention and overall health as well, and the answer could not be other than a straightforward: sugar is far worse than fat for cellulite.

  • Firstly, there are good fats, i.e. omega-3 fatty acids (flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, oily fish etc), which are protective. Furthermore, neutral fats (e.g. extra virgin olive oil, nuts, avocado) are fine as long as they are not over-consumed. And there are okay-ish fats, such as cold pressed seeds and seed oils, which have to be consumed in small quantities.

  • But even when we compare bad fats (i.e. saturated fatty acids), white and brown sugar is still worse. Erroneously considered healthy sugar sources, such as honey, fructose and agave syrup are probably even worse than plain sugar (sucrose), due to their high content of fructose. And of course, everyone now knows that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is one of the worst things you can put in your mouth.

  • Only when we consider nasty fats (trans fatty acids or ANY fried oil of ANY type), sugar starts looking not as bad.

Why is sugar far worse then fat when it comes to cellulite and skin ageing

Sugar raises blood glucose levels AND insulin levels, upsetting blood glucose homeostasis (and consequently overall hormone balance) and leading to hyperglycaemia alternated by hypoglycaemia.

Combined with inactivity, hyperglycaemia followed by hyperinsulinemia lead to direct deposition of triglycerides (fat) into adipocytes (fat cells), especially in the gluteofemoral hypodermis (deep skin layer of the bum and thighs).

Over months or years this leads to the appearance of cellulite.

Certainly fat can have a similar effect but it is not nearly as addictive or as disruptive to hormonal balance. Neither fat causes glycation, which results in collagen and blood vessel damage and overall ageing.

So shall I focus on eating more fat then?

Nope - we should all be focusing on eating more vegetables, berry fruits, oily fish and lean protein primarily; some low GI carbs and monounsaturated fats secondarily; and some naughty foods, like the ones containing sugar or unhealthy fats, only occasionally.

Have a treatment in London with the cellulite experts

At LipoTherapeia we have specialised 100% in skin tightening and cellulite reduction for more than two decades and 20,000+ sessions.

This is all we study and practise every day and have researched and tried hands-on all the important skin tightening equipment and their manufacturers.

As strong, deep acting radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation are the technologies of choice for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, we have invested in the best RF/ultrasound technologies in the world.

(Of course, we keep looking for new technologies every day and if/when a better technology materialises we will be the first to provide it. However, we will never follow the latest ineffective gimmick, just because it’s good marketing to offer the latest hyped up - yet ineffective and/or unsafe treatment.)

Furthermore, over the last two decades we have developed advanced RF and cavitation treatment protocols in order to make the most of our technologies, for maximum results, naturally and safely.

And for even better, faster results, we now combine our RF/ultrasound treatments with high-power red/infrared light LED treatment.

Our radiofrequency/ultrasound/LED treatments are comfortable, pain-free, downtime-free, injection-free, 99.5%+ safe and always non-invasive.

(No unsafe and ineffective RF microneedling or HIFU and no safe but ineffective acoustic wave therapy, superficial RF (bipolar/tripolar/multipolar etc), low power RF/cavitation, electrical muscle stimulation, lymphatic massage, cupping, dry brushing and no ridiculous bum bum creams.)

Our focus is on honest, realistic, science-based treatment, combined with caring, professional service, with a smile.

We will be pleased to see you, assess your cellulite, skin laxity or fibrosis, listen to your story, discuss your case and offer you the best possible treatment.
