Does remote work cause cellulite?

Over the last 24+ years I have seen hundreds of clients quite rightly complaining that office work (sitting down for hours on end combined with a ready supply of snacks from the vending machine) damaged their legs. These days of remote working from home the main issue is the lack of walking that commute used to give us, plus the naughty foods in the food cupboard. However, it doesn’t need to be like that. Flexible, remote working can allow us to have longer lunchtime breaks for a walk or a workout, plus we can always fill the fridge or cupboard with healthy foods and actually improve our health, much more than we could ever do when we used to work from an office. It all comes down to choices.

Working from home and cellulite

How remote working causes cellulite | In summary

  • Working from home can negatively affect cellulite and skin firmness in similar ways to, or even more than, office-based work. Previously, commuting provided incidental exercise through walking, cycling, or running, partly offsetting the effects of prolonged sitting.

  • In contrast, remote work often involves minimal movement, sometimes limited to a short walk from the bedroom to a workspace, leading to severe inactivity. Sedentary habits contribute to water retention, poor circulation, skin laxity, and fat accumulation, all of which can worsen cellulite. Diet also plays a role, with sugar- and fat-rich foods further impairing circulation and skin firmness.

  • However, remote work offers opportunities for improvement if approached mindfully. With greater control over food choices, it is possible to stock healthy options instead of relying on office snacks. Increased flexibility allows for regular exercise, from short walks to extended workouts, helping to improve skin tightness, circulation, and lymphatic drainage.

  • Ultimately, working from home can either exacerbate or alleviate cellulite, depending on lifestyle decisions.

Home working can be bad as office-based work for cellulite and skin firmness - and then some

Remember the good old days that we used to complain about how bad office work is for our leg health and appearance? How long hours at our office desks causes water retention, loose skin and cellulite? How crisps and chocolates at the vending machine make the situation worse?

In hindsight, for many people these were the good days. At least those days we had to commute to the office, which meant that we used to walk at least partially to work. Hey, some people even used to run or cycle to work.

Nowadays, for remote workers the commute to work is a five-second affair, from the bedroom to the study or living room, which means severe inactivity.

How sedentary work causes water retention, cellulite and skin laxity

Inactivity is known to cause both skin laxity, poor circulation/water retention and fat accumulation.

And sugar-rich and fat-rich foods obviously do not help either in those three departments, also undermining circulation and skin firmness and boosting fat accumulation, including hypodermal fat accumulation, i.e. cellulite.

For more detail, read our extensive guide on exactly how sedentary work causes cellulite.

Or, how sedentary work can be much better for your skin and overall health

Of course, home-based work can be better than office-based work:

  • You can fill the fridge with healthy foods, not the horrible sweets and crisps found in ready supply at the office or the convenience stores near the office.

  • And you can walk, run and cycle before your office day starts in the morning, during your lunch time or after your your day’s work is done. Also, given that in most jobs there is flexibility, you can even do a full-on, 1 to 2-hour workout during your lunchtime, as opposed to the 30-40 minutes you could master back in the office days.

The combination will boost skin tightness, reduce cellulite and restore good blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.

All in all, remote office work is what you make it. It can free you up from the constraints of the office (convenience food, limited opportunity for a lunchtime workout) or it can make things worse, if you are stuck at home and fill your cupboard and fridge with convenience food.

As with everything else, it always comes down to our choices.

Have a treatment in London with the cellulite experts

At LipoTherapeia we have specialised 100% in skin tightening and cellulite reduction for more than two decades and 20,000+ sessions.

This is all we study and practise every day and have researched and tried hands-on all the important skin tightening equipment and their manufacturers.

As strong, deep acting radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation are the technologies of choice for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, we have invested in the best RF/ultrasound technologies in the world.

(Of course, we keep looking for new technologies every day and if/when a better technology materialises we will be the first to provide it. However, we will never follow the latest ineffective gimmick, just because it’s good marketing to offer the latest hyped up - yet ineffective and/or unsafe treatment.)

Furthermore, over the last two decades we have developed advanced RF and cavitation treatment protocols in order to make the most of our technologies, for maximum results, naturally and safely.

And for even better, faster results, we now combine our RF/ultrasound treatments with high-power red/infrared light LED treatment.

Our radiofrequency/ultrasound/LED treatments are comfortable, pain-free, downtime-free, injection-free, 99.5%+ safe and always non-invasive.

(No unsafe and ineffective RF microneedling or HIFU and no safe but ineffective acoustic wave therapy, superficial RF (bipolar/tripolar/multipolar etc), low power RF/cavitation, electrical muscle stimulation, lymphatic massage, cupping, dry brushing and no ridiculous bum bum creams.)

Our focus is on honest, realistic, science-based treatment, combined with caring, professional service, with a smile.

We will be pleased to see you, assess your cellulite, skin laxity or fibrosis, listen to your story, discuss your case and offer you the best possible treatment.
