Cavitation treatment: how often should I have it?

I have studied the science of ultrasound cavitation technology for 14 years and have provided more than 13,000 cavitation treatments during that time. In summary, I would say the optimum frequency for these treatments is twice a week to twice a month, if provided with a professional high-spec machine. Unfortunately, using a low-end, home-use machine cannot compensate for the lack of power or even depth of action of professional machines. Neither an extreme intensity ultrasound treatment can offer results in 1-4 sessions, as touted by some irresponsible practitioners. In this article I present all the details.

How often should I have radiofrequency or ultrasound cavitation treatment for cellulite reduction / skin tightening?

RF / cavitation treatment once a week

High-power ultrasound cavitation and high-power radiofrequency are the best two technologies for cellulite removal and skin tightening.

With a high-power setup, the optimum frequency for treatments is once every 3-15 days, i.e. there must be a minimum 1 full day between sessions and a maximum of 15 days.

The 1+ day gap allows for recovery between sessions, which means maximum intensity can be used during treatment.

Weekly treatment is the most practical for most people, but treatment twice a week, for people who want faster results is equally effective (always with a minimum of 1+ full day between sessions).

Treatment every two weeks or every month is just about fine and a great compromise for very busy people, but results will obviously take longer to appear, as sessions are spread more apart.

Cavitation / RF treatment three times a week

An one-day gap is not enough to allow full recovery between sessions, when full intensity is used.

If sub-maximal intensity is used, treatment can be received three times a week for maximum impact in a short space of time.

However, treatment three times a week for more than two weeks becomes too much and is not recommended.

Cavitation/RF treatment every day

This is a really bad idea, even if low-end, low intensity equipment is used, as:

  • It is always important to let skin recover for at least one day between sessions

  • It is a waste of time and money to use a low-power, low-end machine, as best results are achieved from 6-12 maximum intensity SAFE sessions, not from 10-20-30 sessions at low intensities

How often should you do ultrasound cavitation/RF at home? What happens if you do RF/cavitation every day?

All RF / cavitation home-use machines are very low-end (low power, superficial and usually low quality), in order to be affordable and also to protect the public from burning themselves.

Such machines typically produce zero or very few results. So doing cavitation/radiofrequency at home with a low-end machine every day will not achieve much.

You are better off saving your money to go to a good clinic for a great result than to waste it on a home use machine.

Treatment once a month or less often

In terms of improvement with cellulite reduction and skin tightening, this is an absolute joke. Treatment only once a month only suits clinics, not clients, as with monthly treatments, clinics can fit more people in their schedule and/or charge more per session.

“You keep improving for six months between sessions, hence we charge you £800-£3,500 for each session - and you only need one session [or “only two” or “only three” or “only four”, insert as required]”, is the usual blurb.

Indeed RF treatments keep producing results for up to about three months but for good results regular treatments are needed. You don’t need to - and you should not - wait to see the full results first to have your next session.

This is equivalent to saying that if a gym session takes a month to give you its full muscle growth potential, you should only go to the gym once a month.

No-one will get good, long-term, results with just 1-4 sessions - and definitely not if they have treatment every 1-6 months.

Both regularity (every 3-15 days) and multiplicity of sessions (6-12 sessions) are needed for good results.

Treatment once a month or even once in two months is perfect for prevention / maintenance - but not for improvement.

Destructive RF / ultrasound

Some destructive RF/ultrasound treatments cause so much damage that you indeed need a few months of recovery between another injurious session.

These are:

  • Stationary treatments, i.e. the operator does not continuously move the handpiece, in order to actually burn the skin inside (literally)

  • Always provided with anaesthetic cream or injections, as they are very painful

Needless to say that we are totally against destructive RF treatments that burn the skin first in order to harden it later: too many adverse reactions (as in actual burns and scar tissue), too much pain and they don’t work well either.

And due to the sensitivity / damage caused by such treatments, we refuse to touch such cases at the clinic for at least six months after destructive RF / ultrasound treatment.

Stimulative RF/cavitation treatment every 3-15 days is perfect

The way to go is stimulative high-power ultrasonic cavitation/radiofrequency, applied from three times a week to once in fifteen days and always provided responsibly by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist.

FAQ: How often can I do radiofrequency / cavitation on my stomach?

If you receive a proper, strong cavitation/radiofrequency treatment, you have to leave a gap of anything between 1-15 days between sessions.

Radiofrequency/cavitation treatment every day, on the stomach or anywhere else, is not a good idea.

FAQ: How often can you do cavitation/RF at home?

Home RF/cavitation machines are typically a waste of time: just not deep and not strong enough.

In theory, you can compensate for a weak machine by having treatment every day or by having very long sessions. But I would still leave at least one day between sessions, to be on the safe side, especially given that non-professionals can go “crazy” with machines at home and find ways to overdo it.

This is especially true when you use cheap chinese imports which are not approved by regulators in your country.

FAQ: What happens if you do cavitation/RF every day?

Strong, professional RF/cavitation treatments every day are unsafe. You must allow at least 1-2 days between sessions and sometimes more, to allow the skin to recover.

LipoTherapeia® Plus: Have a skin tightening/cellulite treatment with London’s cellulite experts

At LipoTherapeia we have specialised 100% in skin tightening and cellulite reduction for more than two decades and 20,000+ sessions.

This is all we study and practise every day and have researched and tried hands-on all the important skin tightening equipment and their manufacturers.

As strong, deep acting radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation are the technologies of choice for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, we have invested in the best RF/ultrasound technologies in the world.

(Of course, we keep looking for new technologies every day and if/when a better technology materialises we will be the first to provide it. However, we will never follow the latest ineffective gimmick, just because it’s good marketing to offer the latest hyped up - yet ineffective and/or unsafe treatment.)

Furthermore, over the last two decades we have developed advanced RF and cavitation treatment protocols in order to make the most of our technologies, for maximum results, naturally and safely.

And for even better, faster results, we now combine our RF/ultrasound treatments with high-power red/infrared light LED treatment.

Our radiofrequency/ultrasound/LED treatments are comfortable, pain-free, downtime-free, injection-free, 99.5%+ safe and always non-invasive.

(No unsafe and ineffective RF microneedling or HIFU and no safe but ineffective acoustic wave therapy, superficial RF (bipolar/tripolar/multipolar etc), low power RF/cavitation, electrical muscle stimulation, lymphatic massage, cupping, dry brushing and no ridiculous bum bum creams.)

Our focus is on honest, realistic, science-based treatment, combined with caring, professional service, with a smile.

We will be pleased to see you, assess your cellulite, skin laxity or fibrosis, listen to your story, discuss your case and offer you the best possible treatment.
