“I have researched and worked with red and infrared light therapy for 15 years now and I can see that there is still lots of misinformation on the subject of how strong and how long LED light therapy treatments should be and how often should they be performed. For stronger devices and/or longer treatment time, treatment frequency needs to be reduced and vice versa. Here I present a simple rule of how to juggle treatment intensity, length and frequency for different devices combined with some common sense. Please also note that many devices do not provide what’s on the tin, i.e. light intensity and frequency may be quite off from stated specifications. Again, do your research on your device and use common sense.”
How often should I do LED on my face?
LED treatment frequency depends on light intensity and treatment duration
With LED therapy, more is not always better
Always apply common sense

LED treatment frequency depends on light intensity and treatment duration
How often you can have LED treatment on your face - or any other body area - depends on the device’s light intensity. The higher the intensity the less often you should have treatment and vice versa. As with everything else in life a little more is good but a lot more is usually bad - and that applies to LED treatment too.
LED treatment may be almost side-effect free but if you overdo it it can indeed cause skin irritation or other problems.
So with that in mind, the guidelines for treatment frequency are as follows:
With a low-power LED devices (i.e. <30mW/cm2 light intensity) you can have treatment daily or even up to twice a day
With medium power LED devices (i.e. about 30mW/cm2), you can have treatment every other day or even daily
With high-power LED devices (i.e. about 60-120W/cm2), you can have treatment twice a week or a maximum of up to three times a week
In terms of treatment duration, that can be anything between 10-30 minutes on the same area, with an average of 20 minutes. If you tend to have longer LED therapy sessions, have them less often and vice versa.
As different devices differ widely, we cannot possibly define all the possible treatment intensity / duration / frequency combinations, so you must use common sense.
With LED therapy, more is not always better
Remember, like most aesthetic therapies, LED therapy is more like a marathon than a sprint: attempting to burn your face with very strong, very long or very frequent sessions will be counterproductive.
LED therapy is a gentle treatment that works best if you use it moderately and for a long period of time. If you want high-risk “instant miracles” there is always HIFU or RF microneedling to risk burning your face.
Always employ common sense
Please note that light intensity and light frequency on low-end devices may be quite off in terms of what they state on the box (they usually deliver much less intensity than what is stated on the box but sometimes also more - so be vigilant; and frequency may be off too). Higher-end devices are much more accurate in that sense.
Due to these discrepancies, and also due to individual variabilities, don’t take the above guidelines as set in stone: everyone is different, so adapt and adjust according to how your skin feels.
For example, if you feel irritation just reduce LED treatment intensity or frequency or interrupt treatment completely. On the other hand, if you feel treatment is too light, gradually increase LED treatment length or treatment frequency, always exercising common sense and always following the manufacturers instructions.
Always start at lower intensity and then gradually build up in a few days/weeks.
Of course, as with any treatment of any kind, it is a good idea to take complete treatment breaks for a few days every so often, regardless if you use a low-power or high-power device.

Have a treatment in London with the cellulite experts
At LipoTherapeia we have specialised 100% in skin tightening and cellulite reduction for more than two decades and 20,000+ sessions.
This is all we study and practise every day and have researched and tried hands-on all the important skin tightening equipment and their manufacturers.
As strong, deep acting radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation are the technologies of choice for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, we have invested in the best RF/ultrasound technologies in the world.
(Of course, we keep looking for new technologies every day and if/when a better technology materialises we will be the first to provide it. However, we will never follow the latest ineffective gimmick, just because it’s good marketing to offer the latest hyped up - yet ineffective and/or unsafe treatment.)
Furthermore, over the last two decades we have developed advanced RF and cavitation treatment protocols in order to make the most of our technologies, for maximum results, naturally and safely.
And for even better, faster results, we now combine our RF/ultrasound treatments with high-power red/infrared light LED treatment.
Our radiofrequency/ultrasound/LED treatments are comfortable, pain-free, downtime-free, injection-free, 99.5%+ safe and always non-invasive.
(No unsafe and ineffective RF microneedling or HIFU and no safe but ineffective acoustic wave therapy, superficial RF (bipolar/tripolar/multipolar etc), low power RF/cavitation, electrical muscle stimulation, lymphatic massage, cupping, dry brushing and no ridiculous bum bum creams.)
Our focus is on honest, realistic, science-based treatment, combined with caring, professional service, with a smile.
We will be pleased to see you, assess your cellulite, skin laxity or fibrosis, listen to your story, discuss your case and offer you the best possible treatment.
