Multipolar radiofrequency goes deeper than bipolar, so it must be good for cellulite, right?
No and no. Multipolar RF doesn’t go deeper than plain bipolar RF and it is not an effective cellulite treatment.
Multipolar RF, i.e. tripolar, tetrapolar, hexapolar or octipolar RF, is a subtype of bipolar radiofrequency and, contrary to marketing nonsense, it does not reach deeper than bipolar RF.
Yes, multipolar RF is still a bipolar type of radiofrequency. In nature there are only two types or electricity: plus (+) and minus (-).
With so called multipolar RF, the (+) and (-) poles continuously alternate between 3 or more electrodes. So multipolar RF is still bipolar RF, just with the poles alternating, with no extra benefits incurred for cellulite reduction.
Multipolar RF is a gimmicky form of bipolar RF
So multipolar RF is a gimmick to make people think that they have treatment with many poles because “The more poles the deeper/better treatment, right”?
Wrong. Any type of bipolar RF, by its own very nature, cannot effectively reach deep enough, i.e. into the hypodermis, to treat cellulite properly.
This is because most of the current applied on the skin propagates via the treatment medium via which bipolar RF is applied (cream, lotion, serum, glycerine, propylene glycol, you name it) and warms the surface of the skin (epidermis) much more than anything inside the skin.

If you increase the intensity to increase heat in the hypodermis, where cellulite is found, you burn the skin. If you decrease the intensity, to keep the epidermis safe, nothing happens in the hypodermis.
So any small benefit you see from multipolar RF is due to some skin tightening that occurs in the dermis, the middle skin layer.
But even for skin tightening, multipolar/bipolar RF are not good enough, as every time you try to increase intensity for better/faster results the epidermis is overheated.
The only type of RF I would ever use for both skin tightening and cellulite is high-power, resistive, monopolar radiofrequency. But that’s material for another article.
For the moment, the thing to remember is that bipolar RF does not reach deep enough and is not an efficient treatment for cellulite removal, despite what multipolar RF manufacturers claim. If it was we wouldn’t have to spend £100k for our equipment (multipolar RF machines are way cheaper).
