“I have specialised in radiofrequency and cavitation treatment for more than 14 years and fortunately I have a background in Physics, so I can understand the specifications of such equipment and can choose according to data, not according to sales talk. Over the years I have researched all the quality RF / cavitation machines on the market and still continue to do so and I can say that most machines on the market are inadequate for body use, even for average sized people, let alone larger sizes. So before you book an RF/cavitation treatment for cellulite reduction and skin tightening do your research first to avoid wasting your money on treatment with low-spec equipment - and poorly trained therapists too.”

RF/cavitation treatment for larger sizes | In summary
Radiofrequency (RF) and ultrasound cavitation are considered the most effective and safe technologies for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, far superior to HIFU or RF microneedling. However, most machines available are of very low power, suitable only for the face or very small body areas, which makes them inadequate for treating larger areas, especially on plus-sized people.
Even average-sized clients are often underserved, as the low power of these devices means sessions must be unreasonably long to be effective. For instance, treating thighs and buttocks properly might require 80 minutes for a size 10–12 person, but many clinics reduce the time to 40 minutes, leading to poor results and wasted money. For larger clients, sessions could extend to 160 minutes, which is entirely impractical, meaning the aesthetics industry often fails them.
Some machines are powerful enough to handle larger bodies effectively, provided they are used by well-trained, experienced therapists. Treatment may need to be moderately longer, but not excessively so.
Suitable machines should deliver at least 250W of RF power for body use and 50W for ultrasound cavitation. Both clients and clinics must look beyond marketing claims and examine machine specifications, alongside ensuring proper training, knowledge and safety.
I am plus-sized and can’t find a radiofrequency / cavitation treatment to treat me effectively
Radiofrequency and ultrasound cavitation treatments, when provided with good equipment and by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist, remain the best technologies for skin tightening and cellulite (far better and safer than the overhyped, unsafe and underperforming HIFU or RF microneedling).
However, most such machines available on the market are of low to very low power and are suited more to face treatments or to tiny body areas, than larger body areas.
This is especially true for larger-sized people (men and women), where there is simply more volume / surface area to treat. This means that plus-sized people are let down by most equipment manufacturers - and consequently by most clinics and salons.
Unfortunately, most RF/cavitation machines are not even good enough for petite women, let alone curvy, tall or larger women - and men
If a treatment, for example, is of so low power that is needs to be applied on an A4 area (600cm2) for 20 minutes to be effective, it will take 80 minutes to treat the back of thighs, outer thighs and buttocks (typical treatment area request by most people) on a “normal” sized person (size 10-12).
This is way too long, so most clinics simply do 40 minutes when 80 minutes are needed with such low-power equipment and as a consequence they down their clients, both in terms of effectiveness and in terms of cost.
Most treatments are really so inadequate that regular-sized people already get a raw deal at most clinics and salons.
With such low-power machines, on a plus-sized person, treatment duration could easily double, i.e. 160 minutes would be necessary for good treatment, which is totally impractical. So large-sized people are definitely let down by the aesthetics industry.
The good news is that some machines are indeed powerful enough to treat larger-sized people. Combined with good training (essential to avoid adverse reactions), curvy and/or tall men and women can get great results with such equipment.
In some cases, even with the best equipment, treatment times must be longer (too much cellulite / skin laxity).
However, RF/cavitation treatments should never be so long that they become inconvenient, irritating for the skin or too expensive. Perhaps 25% longer treatment to accommodate larger sizes makes sense but 200% longer treatment due to an inadequate machine does not make sense.
How do I choose the right RF / ultrasound technology suitable for plus-sized people?
As a therapist / clinic owner, don’t base your decisions on the profit projections and the marketing fluff salespeople give you. Instead, start asking for specifications.
As a client, don’t base your decisions on TikTok reels, selfies and the usually fake before and after pictures and also start asking for specifications.
Of course, those specifications are a starting point. You must additionally speak to the people at the clinic and use your common sense to ascertain their level of training, knowledge and experience - after first choosing a powerful enough technology at a clinic near you.
What RF/ultrasound power is suitable to treat larger sizes?
A good RF machine for body use must have at least 250W of maximum power - anything else is a waste of money, except when applied in small areas like the stomach or the face
A good ultrasound cavitation machine must be 50W or more
Of course, with power comes responsibility, so make sure you get trained appropriately in order to provide both an effective AND safe treatment to your clients

At LipoTherapeia we have specialised 100% in skin tightening and cellulite reduction for more than two decades and 20,000+ sessions.
This is all we study and practise every day and have researched and tried hands-on all the important skin tightening equipment and their manufacturers.
As strong, deep acting radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation are the technologies of choice for skin tightening and cellulite reduction, we have invested in the best RF/ultrasound technologies in the world.
(Of course, we keep looking for new technologies every day and if/when a better technology materialises we will be the first to provide it. However, we will never follow the latest ineffective gimmick, just because it’s good marketing to offer the latest hyped up - yet ineffective and/or unsafe treatment.)
Furthermore, over the last two decades we have developed advanced RF and cavitation treatment protocols in order to make the most of our technologies, for maximum results, naturally and safely.
And for even better, faster results, we now combine our RF/ultrasound treatments with high-power red/infrared light LED treatment.
Our radiofrequency/ultrasound/LED treatments are comfortable, pain-free, downtime-free, injection-free, 99.5%+ safe and always non-invasive.
(No unsafe and ineffective RF microneedling or HIFU and no safe but ineffective acoustic wave therapy, superficial RF (bipolar/tripolar/multipolar etc), low power RF/cavitation, electrical muscle stimulation, lymphatic massage, cupping, dry brushing and no ridiculous bum bum creams.)
Our focus is on honest, realistic, science-based treatment, combined with caring, professional service, with a smile.
We will be pleased to see you, assess your cellulite, skin laxity or fibrosis, listen to your story, discuss your case and offer you the best possible treatment.

Why train with The Cellulite School™?
We all know that training in cellulite reduction and skin tightening is as basic as it gets. It is typically a 4-6 hour training, involving only basic instruction from the manufacturer on how operators can use the machine; lots of myths, erroneous information and misconceptions; and some basic health and safety on how to use the machine.
There is no proper, real training in the science or cellulite, skin tightening, radiofrequency, ultrasound and all related technologies is non-existent - worldwide.
