At what age do women get cellulite?

TL;DR: Cellulite can start at puberty, due to a combination of female hormones, inactivity and excess calorie intake.

However, a small minority of women never develop cellulite - usually those living in parts of the developing world, untouched by western lifestyles or those who have favourable genes AND follow a very healthy nutrition / exercise regime.

At what age does cellulite appear?

This is a common question at the clinic and the answer is quite straightforward:

  • Cellulite can start appearing as soon as menstruation begins, i.e. in the early teen years, and always in combination with a positive calorie balance

  • Rarely, an excess of estrogen can make cellulite start appearing even before the teen years.

  • On the other hand, some women manage to delay the development of cellulite well into their 60s or later

Let’s check the details.

Cellulite, estrogen, the menstrual cycle and the ageing process

Cellulite development requires both a calorie surplus (more food, less physical activity) AND the female hormone estrogen.

Additionally, the cumulative effects of the menstrual cycles and of the normal ageing process on the body’s connective tissues gradually contribute to the creation of cellulite.

Finally, hormonal contraception and toxins such as nicotine/tar (from smoking/vaping), alcohol and endocrine disrupting chemicals (from plastics), further contribute to the creation of cellulite, quite often severely.

So we have:

  • Positive calorie balance

  • Estrogen

  • Menstrual cycles

  • Ageing

  • Toxins

So, in the western world, cellulite is usually seen:

  • From the early teens for some girls

  • From the late 20s for the majority of women

  • And from the early 40s for the rest of the women

Very few women in the West never develop cellulite

On the other hand, in parts of the developing world (and some in the developed world) many women delay cellulite until the early 60s or never develop cellulite.

This is due to healthy traditional diets, physical activity and little contact with the toxins found in “developed” countries.

Cellulite can start from mid-teens, severe cellulite can appear from the mid-20s

Today in Western countries we can see young girls at the age of 14-15 with quite developed cellulite and women in their 20s with severe cellulite.

This, like overweight, is perfectly acceptable and is considered normal in the western world - and even beautiful for some people (beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

Off course, cellulite itself is not a medical condition. But, it is not natural either and, just like acne, its early/severe appearance may potentially show:

  • An unhealthy lifestyle (too little physical activity, too much or unhealthy food)

  • Ad sometimes underlying hormonal/other health imbalances, for which you need to consult your physician
