What is cellulite exactly?
No more cellulite myths...
If you, like almost every other woman, are confused about what cellulite is, due to conflicting information found in the press, the internet, or that provided by beauty therapists and doctors alike, then read on: this page is for you!
90%...
90% of women will develop cellulite at some point in their lives. There are hundreds of anti-cellulite creams around but 90% of those creams don't do really work. 90% of beauty salons offer some sort of cellulite treatment. And 90% of those treatments fail to offer you anything more than a slight, temporary reduction for the so called cottage cheese skin or orange peel skin (peau d' orange) appearance. And the obvious question is, why?
To find out why, we first have to have a clear knowledge of what cellulite is exactly and what causes it, so that we can determine what is the reason for most treatments failing to offer results, and more crucially how to devise an effective cellulite reduction program.
So what is cellulite exactly?
Cellulite is scientifically defined as Oedematous Fibrosclerotic Superficial Panniculitis (OFSB). In plain English this means: inflammation of the superficial deposits of fat, accompanied by water retention and scar tissue. After that definition was established, it became apparent that cellulite tissue, similarly to other adipose tissues, accumulate fat soluble waste by-products and toxins, therefore, we feel obliged to add the term "toxic" into the above definition to make it complete. So our revised, complete definition is Toxic Oedematous Fibrosclerotic Superficial Panniculitis (TOFSB).
This is how cellulite develops: Stage I: Fat accumulation and fluid retention
To start explaining how the whole thing develops, it's worth noting that fat underneath the skin is always enclosed in little compartments wrapped up by a thin film of connective tissue (connective tissue is made of collagen, elastin and other proteins). These fat pouches are literally suspended by connective tissue strands that attach them to each other and anchor them to your skin and other tissues underneath. This forms a three-dimensional suspension structure.
Now, its also worth noting that fat cells can swell up to 500 times their normal size. As these fat pockets enlarge with excess fat and water, they expand and push the skin surface upwards, causing it to become irregular (lumpy). This is what we call cellulite (see photo below).
As water retention and blood stagnation increases due to poor vein and lymph function, fat removal becomes very difficult, whilst fat accumulation stays relatively unaffected - leading to a nightmare scenario whereby the thighs and hips acting as fat magnets. There are other reasons that cause the fat magnet effect which we analyse elsewhere on this website.
This is how cellulite develops: Stage II - Toxins and inflammation
This accumulation of fat and water, increases inflammation in the tissues which leads to further water retention, thereby creating a vicious circle that if not broken can go on for years and decades.
In addition, water-soluble toxins accumulating in the fluid between cells, and fat-soluble toxins accumulating inside the fat cells have a negative influence in the health of your superficial tissues, further increasing inflammation and water retention and disrupting metabolism.
This is how cellulite develops: Stage III: Scar tissue (fibrosis) and skin looseness (laxity)
As the health of the inflamed tissues deteriorates and fat cells expand the skin, connective tissues becomes thin, weak and loose, adding the component of skin slackness and scarring and connective tissue deformation to your cellulite.
This structural deterioration is to some extent non-reversible, and is the main reason why chronic, established cellulite cannot be removed 100%, in exactly the same way as wrinkles cannot disappear 100% - although of course it can significantly be reduced with the right treatment.
The end result of all this, is puffy, lumpy, flabby skin which is sensitive to touch and easy to bruise.
Clearly, cellulite is not just an aesthetic unpleasantness for it’s owner but a health liability as well and that's why, at LipoTherapeia, we focus so much on improving the health as well as the appearance of your cellulite.
You might have not heard it before, but fat tissue and inflammation are intimately linked, leading to such inflammatory conditions as heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis among other conditions...
Break the vicious circle and fight cellulite naturally with LipoTherapeia and the Lipo Actives
As you can see from the above analysis, one cellulite factor reinforces another, thereby creating several vicious cycles which further deteriorate the quality of your tissues and enhances the appearance of cellulite.
And after seeing how many different factors combine to develop cellulite, it becomes really evident why most cellulite creams and treatments don't work: because they only affect one or at the most two aspects of what we call cellulite, usually focusing in a quick temporary result and/or utilising unnatural, intrusive or harmful procedures.
In contrast, LipoTherapeia creates virtuous cycles and affects all the above six aspects of cellulite in many different ways, thereby helping decrease the appearance of cellulite, and in some cases, eliminate it. We, at LipoTherapeia, daily study all new research that comes out and relates to cellulite, constantly assess and develop new treatments and products, and of course provide treatments and nutritional advice, literally offering you everything that you need to reduce cellulite naturally and effectively.
