Detoxification tips for models and dancers - Part III: Support the digestive system and stop toxins from being reabsorbed by the body
The digestive system is where toxins are either eliminated or recycled back into the body...
...therefore it is essential to support your gut with the appropriate nutrients. This third part of our "detox for models" article deals with exactly that:
- Avoid juice-only or water-only fasts that do not provide your digestive system with the fibre it needs to function properly.
- Soluble fibre, such as that contained in flax seeds, psyllium and oats are your best weapons against constipation. Constipation severely impairs detoxification, as it allows toxins to be reabsorbed by the body and leads to the growth of unwanted microorganisms. In addition, soluble fibre absorbs toxins in a sponge-like manner which in turn are eliminated by the faeces.
- Insoluble fibre is also helpful, especially that contained in fruits and vegetables. Avoid wheat bran which can irritate your intestinal lining by literally scratching it.
- A type of food called inulin, found in artichokes and other vegetables, is used as food by the beneficial bacteria in your colon, thereby helping regularity and detoxification.
- Avoid excessive sugar, starch and alcohol consumption that leads to sluggish digestion as well as the uncontrolled growth of unwanted microorganisms in the gut, which in turn leads to bloating and inflammation in the gut and stomach.
- Toxins are not only detoxified in your liver or kidney, the gut is a major detoxification organ. Good bacteria in your gut (probiotics), help in the detox process in the gut, whilst "bad" bacteria and fungi (dysbiotics) metabolise toxins into even more toxic products, some of which can be carcinogenic. Improving the balance of probiotics to dysbiotics will mean better detoxification, and therefore more energy and less cellulite! The best way to shift the balance between the good and the bad guys is to take a good probiotic supplement, ideally one that contains at least 10 billion organisms such as bifidobacteria, acidophilus and/or saccharomyces boulardii.
