Detox tips for models and dancers - Part II: Helping the liver process and eliminate toxins
The second part of our detox guide for models is about supporting the liver, the body's largest detoxification organ, with valuable nutrients
- Avoid fasting and crash dieting. These practises rob the liver of the very nutrients it needs to perform it’s detoxification role. Remember: detoxification is a nutrient-intensive process and lack of nutrients caused by fasting depletes the liver.
- Avoid processed, sugar, fatty foods and alcohol that overburden the liver. After the festive season the liver has already enough work trying to detoxify the toxins we fed it for two weeks. Alcohol, sugar and fat have to be metabolised by the liver and thereby delay the detoxification process.
- Do prefer vegetables, fruits and herbs that support the liver. Artichoke, olive oil, lemon juice, milk thistle, dandelion root tea, phyllanthus (amla), turmeric, and lecithin all help, either ideally in their natural state, or in supplement form.
- Pulses are also fine, as they provide antioxidants, protein, complex carbs and healthy fats.
- Fish oil or oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, trout etc.) does support the liver and offers multiple health benefits to the entire body, including controlling your weight. Just make sure you buy organic or wild from trusted sources (e.g. wild Alaskan salmon), or alternatively use a high quality, filtered fish oil.
- Avoid smoking, hormonal contraception and unnecessary illegal legal or drugs that load the liver with excess toxins
- Avoid cooked food and drinks contained in plastic containers and in aluminium cans, which are also lined with plastic. Plastic ingredients such as BPA (Bisphenol A) are toxins known as endocrine disruptors that may adersely affect liver function and act as artificial female hormones. Because of this, there are calls for BPA to be banned, but like smoking in public places it will take a decade or too. However, you can personally ban BPA from your life now!
